What is fygge?
fygge (pronounced "fig") is the artistic practice of Adela Rajnović - me! What does it mean? I'm not too sure... But I hope that it evokes feelings of calm, of being grounded, of warm fires and cosy blankets or of sunlight on your face. It's about slowing down and seeing the beautiful in the everyday.
I must admit that my relationship with clay has been a long and bizarre one. I've been in love with it ever since they made us craft clay scarab beetles in Year 3 but have never had the courage to formally commit to it throughout my time in education. Instead, I chose the world of performance and spent a good portion of my life dressing up, prancing around the stage, and even touring. Eventually, though, I realised that perhaps I wasn't tough enough to withstand the heat. So, in 2018 I enrolled in my first throwing class and haven't stopped playing with clay since.
My current practice is focused on form and material. I'm interested in the clay body itself: it's limits, it's imperfections and textures... A lot of my work is spontaneous and intuitive; I like to let the material guide me and define the final shape of each piece. For this reason, no two pieces are the same.
I'm also totally in love with ancient pottery - their shapes, textures, and stories.
I hope someday soon to be able to explore the world of wild clay and the new possibilities for exploration and connection to the world it brings.
